Akufo-Addo has just travelled out of Ghana and the reason is interesting

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday left the country for Switzerland, where he will attend the 5th edition of the Africa CEO forum in Geneva.

President Akufo-Addo will also hold meetings with the Ghanaian community in Geneva.

He is expected back in Ghana on Thursday.

A statement signed by the director of Ccmmunications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, said the forum would bring together CEOs of the largest African and international companies, political decision makers from more than 40 African countries and investors on the continent.

Krachi East NPP wants to convert Mahama’s Community SHS into a district hospital – NDC

Unconfirmed reports circulating in the Krachi East Constituency of the Volta Region indicate that the New Patriotic Party – NPP intends to convert the magnificent World Bank sponsored Community Day Senior High School in the district into a district health facility.

According to reports, the MP, Hon. Michael Gyato is championing this agenda in order to fulfill his promise of delivering a District Hospital within his first year as a Member of Parliament for the area, hence, the idea of converting the education facility into a district hospital.

The school is one of the 200 nationwide community day schools of former President John Mahama for which some have been completed and others at various stages of completion before he lost his second term bid in 2016.

Reacting to the reports, Mr. Edem Gidisu, General Secretary of the NDC in the Krach East Constituency, told Awake News that President Mahama embarked on the nationwide educational ‘infrastructural development in order to bring to reality, the progressively free education.’

He said he can therefore not understand why the NPP will want convert the facility into hospital.
“…It therefore beats my Krachi East NPP wants to convert Mahama’s Community SHS into a district hospital – NDC as to why the NPP in the Krachi East Constituency would hatch such an idea at a time that they are at the verge of implementing g their Free SHS education policy. What fascinates me most is how some of their so called educated members are backing this whole idea.” – Mr. Edem Gidisu said

Mr. Gidisu warns that any attempt by the MP and the NPP to convert the school block into a health centre will be met with tough resistance from the NDC.

“Hon. Michael Gyato, never think of such an idea because it is going to be met with all the resistance it deserves from NDC.”

“You promised to deliver a district hospital in 3months when you are elected as MP, do it!. You promised to lift the whole of Krachi East to a city status, do it!” – He added
Meanwhile, Awake News has made all attempts to rich Hon.

Micheal Gyato for his response, but all efforts proved abortive.
Krachi East Constituency located in the northern part of Volta Region is the only seat for the NPP in the region.

More Women In Government Will Help Reduce Crime Against Women - Zanetor Rawlings

Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle Constituency, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings has called on women to put aside gender stereotypes, take up jobs in public and other sectors and occupy leadership positions just like their male counterparts in order to help fight against gender disparity.

Explaining her point, she said if there were more women occupying offices in the various arms of government, as well as in the private sector, issues regarding domestic violence and other awful crimes against young girls and women would have been minimized.

“I think that If we were to have a lot more women represented in the various arms of government, as well as in the private sector and everywhere else, issues regarding domestic violence and sexual abuse, and defilement of our young girls will not be as awful as they are right now because we will have a lot more women fighting for the rights of our young children,” she opined.

Dr. Zanetor Rawlings made this call when she joined other women leaders and entrepreneurs at the National Women’s Summit organized by Charter House in Accra Thursday.

The National Women’s Summit was organized in line with the International Women’s Day marked extensively worldwide on March 8 to celebrate women and their role in society.

According to the Klottey Korle legislator, women should not be frightened when they see men in certain positions but should also make the attempt to get there because not all the men occupying public offices or in various positions are great but were put there because they are ‘men’.

However, as the fight for equal representation through the Affirmative Action Bill heightens, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings said there was the need for women to enrich their knowledge so as to help those who are willing to get into public offices and positions to improve upon themselves.

“If we’re to achieve that objective of having equal representation as at some point … what we need to do as women to ensure the quality of women who are making it into these positions is to ensure that we are enriching our knowledge and helping those around us who will like to get into such areas to improve upon themselves,” she clarified.

She has, therefore, called on society to have respect for women and recognize the fact that women are capable of doing a lot to change the world at large.

“The reality is where you have more women you have a balance representation, whether it’s in peace building, and if you’re doing anything relating to conflict resolution and you have women on the panel, you have a more lasting outcome of peace so women have a vital role to play,” she emphasized.

Kofi Wayo 'Resigns' From Politics

Maverick politician and founder of the defunct United Renaissance Party (URP) Charles Kofi Wayo has announced his departure from Ghanaian politics hinting that he is now into farming.

Giving reason for his decision he said “ I am now into farming and assisting the farmers in the villages with implements and other logistics unlike their MPs who are cruising in landscruiers and don’t care about them”.

He observed that successive government have paid lip service to farmers in rural Ghana and further impoverished the farmers who are unable to fend for their families when they are supposed to be the ones to be properly taken care of.

“While you guys were at the independence square dancing and making some useless noise, I was in the farm working. These farmers need first aid and I want government to institute measures to make healthcare accessible to them. I am celebrated being in the village giving exercise books and cutlasses to the poor farmers who need them”, he stated.

The livid politician maintains that both New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress are only seeking to enrich themselves and not the welfare of the masses who voted for them his reason he would not accept any appointment from them.

Ghana is lucky to have Nana Addo as president - Mugabe

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe hailed his Ghanaian counterpart, Nana Akufo-Addo for delivering an excellent speech at Ghana’s 60th independence anniversary celebration on Monday.

The 93-year-old president said he was highly inspired by Akufo-Addo’s speech, he opined that the speech was re-igniting and shot up Africa’s image.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, President Mugabe said what Akufo-Addo did on Monday showed Ghanaians have found a right leader who would champion the vision of Ghana and the vision of pan-Africanism.

President Mugabe was recently in Singapore for a “medical review”.

He celebrated his 93rd birthday at a lavish ceremony in Harare last week.

Tax cuts won’t affect gov’t revenue – Mustapha Hamid

Government deciding to abolish and reduce some taxes does not necessarily mean the government is headed for a loss, this is according to the Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid.

According to him, it will instead empower the private sector to expand and also employ more people.

“On the face of it, when you cut taxes, the understanding is that you are losing revenue, but on the flip side, it means that you will take some financial burden off businesses which then enables them to expand and in expanding they will employ more people. And therefore you are able to solve some of your unemployment problem,” he added.

The Minister made the remark on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday.
He made the comment on the back of an announcement made by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta with regards to the scrapping of some taxes considered as “nuisance.”

Mr. Hamid explained that, the tax cuts will stimulate growth of the Ghanaian economy.

“When the Finance Minister announced the scrapping of taxes on imported spare parts, there was jubilation at Abossey-Okai, and then immediately the leadership of the spare parts dealers at Abossey-Okai said that they themselves were going to go from shop to shop to ensure that every trader in Abossey-Okai was tax compliant, to ensure that they pay their taxes to government.”

"When that happens, even though you’ve lost some revenue, you will get it back through the commitment of these people who are excited that you have relieved them of some burden.

So cutting taxes may not necessarily mean that you have lost revenue as such because it will stimulate the growth of businesses and therefore help you to employ more people and those people who are employed will also pay taxes. So it is a give and take affair,” he added.

Nana Addo ‘deliberately discredited’ Nkrumah – CPP

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), has described as regrettable President Nana Addo’s address during the sixtieth anniversary celebration, which they say sought to downplay Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s role in Ghana’s independence struggle.

The President’s speech came under attack by a section of Ghanaians over what they say was a skewed account of Ghana’s history to suit his father, Edward Akufo-Addo, and uncle, J.B Danquah who played vital roles in Ghana’s journey towards independence.

Even though the president’s spokesperson has rubbished these claims, the Director of Communications of the late Kwame Nkrumah’s party, CPP, Kadir Abdul Rauf, insists President Akufo Addo clearly tweaked Ghana’s history to please his ancestry.

“We as a party can see a deliberate attempt by the President not only to minimize the role of Kwame Nkrumah in the independence struggle of the country, but also to take up arms against the history of our country because for example as a party, we have argued that yes, it doesn’t take  single individual to win independence for people.

It must take the efforts and sacrifice of people, but in line with principles of history, it took one person’s efforts to climax several years of people’s trouble and in the case of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah assumed that role and any attempt to minimize or deny Kwame Nkrumah this role is most regrettable.”

According to him, “ if the President[Nana Addo] wants to mention names that he thinks have been left out of the scene then there are other equally important names that he should have mentioned” but failed to do so.

Buttressing his point with significant examples, Mr. Kadir Abdul Rauf said Nana Addo had no businesses giving credit to J.B Danquah and Edward Akuffo, since they dissociated themselves from two significant events that led to Ghana’s independence.

“We think that the President used a cherry picking attitude to our history and we think that it is most unfortunate and we are opposed to the attitude towards the history of our country.

The two most significant events that happened towards the independence of Ghana, JB. Danquah and the rest were not part of it. For example, the 1948 riot which sparked a chain of events that subsequently brought down colonialism in Ghana, J.B Danquah and his colleagues dissociated themselves from it, and they said it was a communist agitator, Kwame Nkrumah who was buying it and they had nothing to do with it.”

Akufo Addo didn’t skew Ghana’s history – Mustapha Hamid

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid, has rejected claims that the President attempted skewing Ghana’s history to favour his father and uncle, Edward Akufo-Addo and J.B Danquah.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show , Mr Hamid said there is no deliberate attempt change the history of Ghana in favour of the two, emphasizing that the two indeed played significant roles in ensuring Ghana’s independence.

“It is the history as it is. People didn’t even know that there were women who fought for our independence. Even for me, that was the first time I heard about the [Akua] Shorshorshor woman, beautiful name like that who sacrificed her every penny. Every nation has what it calls founding fathers. If you go to America, they talk about John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson among others as the founding fathers of America, even though at the same time Washington had a pride of place in American history.”
