Muslim women have been urged to maintain and preserve wearing of the Hijab, the prescribed dress code for Muslim women, describing it as a moral fabric of today’s society and generations to come.
They have also been advised not to be deceived to reject it because it is a living teaching that seeks the protection and enhancement of their dignity and modesty.
Mr. Abdul Samad Issah, Secretary Sanat-O-Tijarat of Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Ghana, gave the admonition during the morning session of the second day of the 85 Annual National Convention.
He said the Hijab does not only give physical security to women but also represents a key means of giving them spiritual security and purity of the heart.
He said wearing of the Hijab is a basic commandment of the Holy Qur’an to augment the morality and spirituality of women as well as to help mankind to benefit from the revival and regeneration of Islam.
Muslims would have failed woefully in their duties like dry branches attached to a living tree and would constitute a great disservice to the true teachings of Islam if they rejected the Hijab, he added.
Mr. Issah noted that the issue of inferiority complex was the root of the inability of some Muslim women to observe this important commandment of the Holy Qur’an and urged them not to follow orthodoxy but instead stand out.
He debunked the assertion that the commandment of Hijab is an Arabic culture followed by the wives of Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and not meant for mankind, noting that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent to the whole of mankind. Consequently, practices observed by the Prophet and his household are meant not only for the Arabs but the whole of mankind.
He said “the Qur’an describes the Holy Prophet as the best exemplar for mankind to emulate” . Elsewhere in the Holy Qur’an Chapter 21 verse 108, we are also told that
“And We have sent thee not but as a mercy for all people” .
Mr. Issah noted that history has shown that members of the so-called western society who pride themselves of championing women freedom and liberation, only accorded right to own property and inheritance to women in the recent past whiles Islam accorded these same rights to women over 1,400 years ago.
Mr. Issah pointed out that the Hijab is made incumbent for women of religion as an act of righteousness and quoted verses from both the Holy Qur’an and the Bible to support his argument. For example images of Mary (mother of Jesus Christ) as well as dress code for Catholic sisters and testify to this as they are seen observing Hijab.
Further, some Christian sects such as Pentecost insists that their female members put on veils during worship.
He said the Hijab has unfortunately been wrongly and naively described by the Western world as being barbaric, backward, outmoded, symbol of slavery and inhibition of freedom of women.
Such view and objections has emanated from the erroneous impression that Islam uses Hijab to subjugate women.
