Samira Bawumia, wife of Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned the assault on an employee of Fast Food joint, Marwako, in Accra.
Mrs Bawumia stated that the treatment meted by Jihad Chaaban, who heads the Abelenkpe branch of Marwako Fast Food, to Evelyn Boakye is simply unacceptable.
Evelyn Boakye is said to have had her face dipped into pepper sauce by her Lebanese supervisor, Jihad Chaaban.
Already, close to 2,500 people have signed an online petition launched last week to seek justice for the Ghanaian worker who was assaulted by her employee.
The petitioners, addressed to President Nana Akufo-Addo, want the government to stem the tide of abuses suffered by Ghanaians in the hands of their employers.
The online petition is calling for an end to “inhumane treatment of Ghanaians by foreigners” and a shutdown of the fast food chain.
Mr Chaaban was arrested and later granted police inquiry bail as investigations continue.
Speaking on the issue, while hosting the special edition of the Super Morning Show on Joy FM on International Women’s Day, the Second Lady noted that Lebanese supervisor should be the one to be punished.
“I think it’s one too many but I think it’s the employee who needs to be penalised. It’s unacceptable and I saw yesterday the Gender Minister was there with the lady and I’m sure they are going to push this to its logical conclusion,” she said.
The Employment Minister has directed managers of Marwako Fast Food to produce a report over the incident within a week.
Ignatius Baffour Awuah told the media Tuesday the report of the company will assist the ministry's own investigation into the incident.
